Frequently asked questions

Contract Electronics Manufacturers (CEM’s), like Contract Production, are companies that manufacture, assemble and test electronic products under contract for other companies.

CEM’s make product manufacturing possible to companies that lack, or choose not to have, in-house manufacturing capability by outsourcing some or all of the assembly to a trusted manufacturing partner. CPL are able to take on responsibility for the whole build or partial build of your project, depending upon your own company’s specific requirements.

We can source and procure all of the components required for manufacture and assembly of your product, provide full functional testing, and where requested provide a box build service to assemble the tested unit into a finished product. If required we can also ship directly to your customer or end user providing a full turnkey manufacturing solution.

At Contract Production we have the capabilities to place a wide variety of component types including 0201 SMT footprints and complex BGA and MicroBGA devices with high density pin arrangements. We also manufacture and assemble through hole components with hand and wave soldering options including both Pb and Pb Free Solder.

To provide an accurate quotation we need the Gerber data for your PCB design, a BoM listing the required components and any critical values along with any other relevant information that you feel would help us to accurately interpret your project requirements. We will also need to know how many units you may need along with a required leadtime and any special assembly instructions or requirements.

Whilst there may be some advantages to using an offshore supplier having a UK based manufacturing partner can provide greater supply chain control and flexibility, shorten lead times, improve cash flow and provide consistent quality and delivery.

We've also written a helpful article on offshoring vs. onshoring of electronics.

We only purchase from reputable, trusted supply partners and approved manufacturers to ensure that all the products and components we use in the course of manufacturing your electronic assemblies are of the highest possible standard and quality.

All incoming manufacturing data is design rule checked (DRC) to ensure that it meets the necessary criteria for production and we address any potential issues that may arise prior to manufacture. No changes are made or alternative components used without your approval. All jobs have their own manufacturing packs generated for reference, and there are also several inspection stages performed throughout the manufacturing process including manual and automated optical inspection (AOI) along with functional testing where requested.

All assembly work is carried out in ESD protected areas to IPC A-610 Class 2 as standard and our bare PCB’s are manufactured on UL94V-0 approved laminates.

We have a number of business relationships with other service providers, for example, PCB design, plastic tooling design and moulding partners, precision metalwork shops and cable / harness suppliers.

Most have worked with us for many years which enables us to provide introductions with trusted partners to support and enhance your project development.

Contract Production is an ISO9001:2015 accredited company, and all our work is assembled and inspected to IPC A-610 Class 2 as a minimum, with workmanship guaranteed for 1 year from the date of supply.

Yes - we will repair or replace any faulty boards that we have manufactured under our workmanship guarantee, but we are unable to offer a repair service for PCBs manufactured by other companies.
